- President's Residence -

Land Owner: James M. Hunt

1878 Mr. Hunt sold a small lakefront parcel of .10 Acre out of his 50.50 acre holding adjacent to the Northerly boundary of the original purchase made in 1876 by the Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly, which boundary was at what is now approximately Scott Avenue
1880 The Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly purchased Mr. Hunt's 50.40 acre balance extending the North lakefront to about Prospect Avenue/ Consideration $12,600/ Warrantee deed recorded in Liber 183/197
1880 Rev. R.M. Warren and his wife, Sarah A. Warren sold the .10 acre to the Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly that the couple owned for only two years/ Consideration $480/ Liber 183/196

The 1880 purchases brought the area of the Grounds up to about 139 acres. Much of the new land was set apart for public parks and Summer School purposes. Several proposed streets that would have cut through this University Hill Park were never developed. Harris Avenue was intended to reach from Pratt Avenue to North Lake Drive but its lower end was never developed. When the Institution decided to build a new residence for the incumbent President of Chautauqua, it chose the corner of the park shown for the site. The 110 feet of the low end of Harris Avenue made up 40 feet of the 100 foot width and the balance of 60 feet was carved out of the Park.

The new Presidential Residence is Victorian in style and looks as though it had stood there for many decades. It was built between the 1984 and 1985 Summer Seasons.

1984 Chautauqua Institution deed to Chautauqua Institution/ Liber 2035/131
