Miller Family Papers. - 1832-2013. - 28 ft. 9 in. of textual materials.
The family of Lewis and Mary Valinda Miller (née Alexander) was a prosperous and active family living in Akron Ohio, which became involved with several business and philanthropic works in their community and beyond. The Inventors' Hall of Fame now stands on a portion of the property where the Aultman & Miller farm equipment factory originally stood. They lived on top of the hill overlooking Akron in a comfortable home, which they named Oak Place. The Miller family was friends with many prominent educators, politicians, and industrial leaders of the time, including the Ford, Firestone, and Goodrich families. In time, they were also connected by marriage to the Wise family of Connecticut, the Igoes family of Indiana, the family of William Wallace and Florence Nichols from New York (later also Manitou Springs Colorado), the family of Halbert Hitchcock of Ohio, and Thomas Edison. The family fell on hard times due to changes in the farm machinery industry and the Panic of 1893. Nevertheless, many of the children went on to successful careers.
