Gates) of Buffalo, NY, leased several contiguous Lots and added others so that by 1907 she controlled Lots 258 through 264/ She called the cluster the Muncie Cottages and operated them for many summer Chautauqua Seasons until her death in 1928/ Mrs. Gates had acquired Lot 265 in 1915 and held all eight when she died/ Mrs. Gates willed to her brother, Fred J. Nelson "who has lived with me and cared for me the last years of my life" six of the eight cottages/ She left Annex #1 to her brother, Arthur T. Nelson and left the Dixie to her step-daughter, Mrs. Grace Nelson Lothridge of Tampa, FL/ Mrs. Lothridge assigned her leasehold to Fred J. Nelson giving him seven Fred J. Nelson and his wife, Grace E. Nelson continued the Muncie boarding house operation until 1943/ Mr. Nelson died December 22, 1943 and his surviving wife, Grace E. Nelson sold the property to VanDyke and Mildred T. Underwood of Jamestown, NY in 1944/ After remodeling they renamed it the North Shore Inn and were the Innkeepers until they sold the property in 1970 The century old frame cottages were razed. |
