Gov. Charles Evan Hughes. 1907. B&W print photo, 5 x 7" mounted on mat board, showing Governor Charles Evans Hughes (in top hat). The man in civilian dress sitting across from the Governor is possibly Chautauqua President George E. Vincent., and Arthur Bestor, future President of Chautauqua, is standing next the coachman. The other two men sitting in the carriage are unidentified. New York Governor Charles Evans Hughes visited Chautauqua in 1907 and delivered Saturday afternoon address at the Amphitheater, August 24, 1907. This photo was probably taken earlier in the day, perhaps en route to the governor's meeting with the Board of Trustees. August 24, 1907. Notation on back: Gov. Hughes in carriage. Pres. George E. Vincent, Arthur Bestor next to driver. 1907-1910-Gov. of New York. Chautauqua, 1907, Aug. 24-2:30. 1910-Appointed to be Justice of Supreme Court. 1916-Nominated by Republican convention-Narrowly defeated by Woodrow Wilson. |
