Description |
Sagemono. Before 1900. Late 19th Century Japanese. Consists of wood-carved three compartment "inro," a carved male figurine, "netsuke," and small carved, "ojime." Traditional Japanese garments had no pockets; personal accessories had to be suspended from a cord worn around the carrier. The "inro" was used to hold ink and seals for writing. The "netsuke" was the toggle and the "ojime" served as a slide for making the string tight. Given by Addie Mae Smith-Wilkes. |
